Nikko Toshogu Shrine was built in 1617 by the second Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, and is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, as well as a shrine dedicated to him as a deified deity.
Although the official name of the shrine is “Toshogu”, it is called “Nikko Toshogu” to distinguish it from other Toshogu Shrine in other areas of Japan.
It is said that when the shrine was first built, it was a modest shrine compared to the present one.
Later, in 1636, the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, built the main shrine buildings, including the most famous structure of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the Yomeimon Gate.
Tokugawa Iemitsu, a great admirer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, spent enormous sums of money to build the lavishly decorated shrine buildings.
Craftsmen were assembled not only from Edo (Old name of Tokyo) but also from Kyoto, Osaka, and other parts of Japan, and it is said that the construction was completed in only one year and five months.
